Grades 7-9
In this well-crafted and moving story, a boy living in Israel at the time Christ must deal with his hatred of the Romans and his ailing sister. He belongs to a group of violent Zealots and is friends with Simon the Zealot, one of the apostles of Jesus. He lets hatred rule his life but after the death a fellow Zealot, he comes to realize that the Zealot band he had lived with is no more than a gang of robbers who think of themselves first. He is attracted to the teachings of Jesus, but confused about the contradictions in his words. Is this the chosen one who will lead Israel to freedom from the Romans and establish the kingdom of God? A true must-read!
The Discussion Guide contains a one page synopsis, three before reading suggestions, vocabulary and discussion questions for each chapter (some chapters are combined), three after reading discussion questions, five writing prompts.
