This 2002 Newberry winning story is set in Medieval Korea. A homeless orphan earns by his courage and perseverance the fulfillment of his dream. His greatest wish is to learn the art of pottery making for which his village famous throughout Southeast Asia. However, since he is an orphan there is no way that he may be allowed to do it. However, he wins the respect and finally the heart of a master potter who adopts him. There is a great contrast between the characters of the stern master potter and the gentle, intuitive man who has raised the boy. The 12- page guide includes discussion questions, character analysis, mapping, and several writing prompts.
