by Sister Maria Thecla, S.C.
This is a photocopied version of a Latin reader, originally published in 1958, that we are considering reprinting. We are offering it here for simply the cost of photocopying and the envelope to send it. If you'd like to check it out for this wonderful price (!) all we ask is that you give us your comments about it after trying it with your students.
What's really neat about this reader is that the featured stories are about saints or Catholic prayers. (For example, Sanctus Stephanus, Signum Crucis, David et Goliath.) There are a total of 16 stories. After each selection there are questions in Latin to help review the main points of the story. There is also an exercise in English derivitives after each selection. An extensive glossary is provided in the back. We believe that this is real gem, but want to find out how it works with homeschoooling families.
The introduction says to start using the reader after learning the first declension of nouns and the present tense of verbs. So, you will want to continue to use your Latin grammar program. And, although, its subtitle is "A First Latin Reader," it is not for young children as a first primer/reader might be. Depending on your fluency with Latin and the progress of your students, it would probably be appropriate for 6th grade and up.
P.S. It received the Nihil Obstat and the Imprimatur in 1954
We've set up a blog with translations of the stories and an answer key for the questions. We've also included tidbits about the Latin grammar that is pertinent or special to the story. You may want to preview the blog before purchasing the photocopy to be sure the stories and level of translation are appropriate for you level of student.
