Mr. Edmunds won the Newbery Medal for this story set in upstate New York at the time of the French and Indian War. Edward's father is called up to fight the Indian raiders who are reportedly on the move. While he is gone, Indians arrive at Edward's home. Thanks to the courage and resourcefulness of Edward's mother, the family is saved. Edward, however, must shoot the "matchlock gun" that not even his father has ever shot. The story, based on actual events, is very suspenseful and gratifying. The 11 page discussion guide includes a synopsis, teaching tips, four before reading activities, vocabulary and discussion questions for each chapter (some are combined), seven after reading activities including art activities, working with the New York state map, making a story map and puppets.

This book is used in Mother of Divine Grace (MODG) in 4th grade.
