The Door in the Wall
by Marguerite D'Angeli
Grades 4-6
This is the story of a young boy from a noble family in England at the time of the plague. His father is off fighting with the King, his mother is attending the Queen, and all his servants have died of the plague. He himself has been stricken with an illness that has taken the use of his legs. A monk comes to help him and takes him to the monastery to await news from his parents. While there, he learns about the life of a monastery and how to deal with the "cross" of useless legs. He eventually becomes a hero in a battle against the Welsh and is reunited with his parents. It is a beautiful story about accepting your cross and being joyful besides. The 10 page discussion guide includes, pre-reading activities, discussion questions divided into ten sections of the book, writing prompts and post-reading activities.
This book is used in Mother of Divine Grace (MODG) in 8th grade.
